Zoning Board of Adjustments – City of Pittsburgh

The Board of Adjustment is a three member panel, one of which must be a lawyer, appointed by the Mayor.  The Board meets weekly to hear appeals to consider granting variances or special exceptions to the Zoning Ordinance. Art Commission – City of Pittsburgh

 The Art Commission works to improve the aesthetic quality of the City’s public spaces. The Commission is comprised of nine members appointed by the Mayor and representing various disciplines in the arts.

The Art Commission is mandated to review the urban design and architectural and landscape features of structures which are erected on or above land owned by the City; which are within the public realm under its control, including parks and bridges; and in which City funds are invested. The Art Commission administers the review process, which includes preliminary and final approvals. The Art Commission is also mandated to review all works of art owned by the City of Pittsburgh and those proposed to be acquired by the City. For more information about the Art Commission, call Morton Brown, Public Art Manager, at 412-255-8996.

Historic Review Commission- City of Pittsburgh

The Historic Review Commission (HRC) protects and maintains historically and architecturally significant buildings and neighborhoods in the City. The HRC is comprised of seven members appointed by the Mayor which must include an architect, a preservationist, a realtor, a building inspector, and a planner.

When a building is designated as an historic landmark, the Historic Review Commission has jurisdiction over all proposed new construction, demolition, and exterior work to the building. The review process begins only when an owner decides to do work to the exterior of their building.
