ONE NORTHSIDE KNOWLEDGE SESSIONS: HOUSING
One Northside Initiative

Over the summer and fall of 2015, three public knowledge sessions were held regarding housing on the Northside, an income diverse neighborhood undergoing new development. These sessions provided a platform for dialogue between local residents, public officials and developers. Residents were able to learn about the current condition of housing as well as inform public officials about housing issues in their neighborhood.

BLIGHT
BOOTCAMP

​Pittsburgh Blight Working Group

Blight Bootcamp was a two day event for residents to learn about resources and best practices to increase the impact of community-led blight elimination efforts in Pittsburgh neighborhoods. It provided the learning and growth opportunity to organizations and residents so that they can lead the change in the health and well-being of their neighborhoods.

BIZBLOOM: GETTING TO KNOW BLOOMFIELD'S MAIN STREET

Bloomfield Development Corporation

BizBloom was a pilot program to gather data, prototype design interventions, and develop recommendations that can support and strengthen a diverse main street in the context of Bloomfield’s changing identity. In order to create a narrative of who works and lives in Bloomfield, this report includes recommendations and business district posters.

LOWER HILL COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS
Hill Community Development Corporation

The Hill Community Development Corporation approached the Design Center to help with understanding the concepts in the Preliminary Land Development Plan (PLDP) in order to educate the community about the proposal and give the community the skills needed to make an informed decision about the plan.

CARNEGIE LIBRARY OF HOMESTEAD COMMUNITY STUDY
Carnegie Library of Homestead

In August of 2006 the Carnegie Library of Homestead (CLoH) hired Design Center of Pittsburgh to undertake a community-input process to understand how the library can best serve the needs of its constituents. Design Center assisted the CLoH with establishing a Steering Committee and facilitating community meetings. This process enabled CLoH to pursue a renovation to its facility that is community supported.

DESIGN EXCELLENCE LECTURE SERIES

Beginning in the 2008 until 2011, Design Center Pittsburgh put together the Design Excellence Lecture Series, a three-event series featuring nationally-acclaimed experts in the field of civic planning and design.  Speaker presentations embraced the recurring themes of city-building and visionary planning, sustainability, community engagement and civic awareness, transformation while embracing the past, and innovative use of technology. Some of the lecturers that were featured included Doug Heuck, Jim Denova, Steve Craig, and Mindy Fullilove.
